Friendship bands became popular during the late 80s among teens in their long summer vacations and camping. Creative minds used to learn almost every art and craft at those times with great passion. At that time period, all teens wore friendship bands eagerly and profoundly. The more number of friendship bands one had carried on his/her wrist, the more reliable, sincere and caring a person supposed to be a “friend” . It was in fact, considered a great “honor” to receive a large number of friendship bands.
Sometimes, girls used to made all designs and techniques for themselves and secretly tied it on their own wrist but….. always pretend that some other friend, beyond school/college has granted this great “honor” upon them.
No doubt, it was a precious “treasure”.
To me, the simplest way to make a friendship band is as follows:
- Take a thread of love .
- Now choose its four basic strands : love, care, respect and trust.
- Weave it by your heart.
- Hide best wishes in each knot.
- Finally, tie it with lots of prayers.

Everyone can learn it easily. All you need is a “FRIEND” who really, truly deserves the friendship band you are going to make with sincere efforts (after all your time and eye-sight are also very precious) .
Then you need some embroidery floss or yarns, tape/ safety pins ( that will keep the bracelet in place), a scissor.
You can make it as thick or thin as per your choice ( or love towards your best friend;)
Now determine the order of the color of your rows according to the desirable design. After making 3-4 inch in length, the design become clear to you and you will easily assess the color scheme in association within the pattern. Continue to your required length and at the end, cut off the extra floss.
The last and the most important step is to go to your friend, find him/her, catch him/her, grab his/her wrist and tie your friendship band with all your dignity and grace.
